Does KindlyMD provide substance use disorder (SUD) or opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment?

KindlyMD provides integrated behavioral health services, including limited primary care, mental health support, and medical cannabis recommendations. However, we are not a substance use disorder (SUD) or opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment facility and do not advertise or function as one. We do not offer detox programs or specialized addiction treatment, but we can refer patients to appropriately licensed providers when necessary.

Our role in managing controlled substances is limited to supporting patients with existing prescriptions, with an emphasis on responsible tapering strategies under our providers’ DEA-licensed scope of practice. In some cases, cannabis may be considered as an alternative to certain medications that carry withdrawal symptoms when discontinued. However, we do not use or promote cannabis as a treatment for addiction or substance use disorder.

Because we do not provide addiction treatment services, we are not classified as an SUD or OUD treatment facility, nor do we require a specific license for these programs.

What if I run out of my medicine?

We’ll schedule your visit a few days before your prescription runs out, so no need to worry! We can even offer telemedicine in some cases when your schedule is particularly busy. We won’t leave you hanging — call us if you have any concerns about your treatment.

Will I be notified of any changes to my medication or dosage?

Always! Your care team is there to work with you to determine any updates needed in your regimen.

What is medication management when it comes to mental health?

In the mental health world, medication management is a level of treatment that includes an initial evaluation of psychiatric needs (i.e. talk therapy), the prescribing of medication as needed, and symptom monitoring/ongoing care. It’s literally a one-stop healing shop.

Does KindlyMD offer hormone replacement therapy (HRT)?

Yes, we offer estrogen-only therapy (ET) as well as estrogen plus progestogen therapy (EPT). Currently, KindlyMD refers patients seeking gender-affirming hormone therapy to the University of Utah Transgender Health Program for comprehensive care..

I’m a few pills short for the month. What do I do?

Our prescribers and BHCs will often work with our patients to accommodate specific situations. Laws and regulations may not always allow for an early fill, but in that case, we’ll work with you to find alternative methods to find relief.

Medical Card

Can I have a Medical Card if I am taking pain medications?

Yes, absolutely! We support any treatment available that may help our patients feel better. Based on what works best for a patient’s needs, traditional pain medication and plant-based medicine can even be used together for optimal relief, while properly monitored by your prescriber.

Can I get off my pain medications with KindlyMD?

We help patients wean off narcotics, sleeping pills, and antidepressants by integrating prescriptions, mental health, and alternative medicine. We are the only organization in Utah providing this treatment flexibility based on patients' needs. We understand that many of these prescribed medications cannot be cut abruptly without harsh side effects. For this reason, we provide education to our patients to use both traditional and alternative medications in tandem safely while working on tapering down their pills.

What are some of the most common qualifying conditions for obtaining a Med Card?

Qualifying conditions for a Medical Card vary from state-to-state, but some of the most common in the country are pain, nausea, PTSD, and cancer. In Utah specifically, a patient can obtain a Med Card for one of the following 15 conditions:
Chronic Pain (lasting 2+ weeks)
ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease)
Alzheimer’s disease
Autism
Cachexia
Cancer
Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis

PTSD
Terminal Illness
Rare Conditions
Conditions Requiring Hospice Care

Would a Med Card put me at risk to lose my job?

In some states with Med Card programs, there are limited protections for state and local government employees that view herbal medicine use the same as other prescription medication use. This protects employees from being fired for “testing dirty” on a drug screen but does not protect them if they come to work intoxicated or perform poorly at the job because of their use. Private employers can still discipline or fire someone for use if they have such a policy. Alternatively, the use of herbal medicines in Utah without a Medical Card is always illegal and puts you at risk for losing your job.

Can I have a Med Card if I’m already taking pain pills?

Definitely! Our providers are highly-trained in plant-based medicine treatment. If you and your care team decide it’s right for your condition, we’re here to educate you on safe consumption and to help keep you a law-abiding citizen. KindlyMD offers a unique and innovative model of patient-first healthcare. We integrate prescriptions, mental health, and alternative medicine using data-driven care plans. We are the only organization in Utah providing this treatment flexibility based on patient's needs.

Mental Health

What does a visit with the BHC look like? Should I stop seeing my regular therapist?

In a typical appointment at KindlyMD, after visiting with your prescriber, you’ll get to talk with a behavioral health clinician (BHC). This is much less in-depth than your usual 50-minute therapy visit, but helps to understand some of the core issues you might be dealing with as well as what social or emotional issues may be contributing to those issues. If longer, more in-depth sessions are desired with a mental health professional, KindlyMD also offers traditional therapy sessions. Give us a call to learn more.

Are there any options for group therapy?

Our therapists and counselors specialize in a variety of different therapies and modalities and may offer group therapy based on a patient’s needs. Speak to your provider or care team for more details.

Can your therapists help people with behavioral addictions like sex or gambling?

Our BHCs and mental health professionals specialize in a variety of different behavioral conditions. Call and speak to a member of the KindlyMD care team to find out if our providers best fit your needs.

These include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), cognitive processing therapy (CPT), cognitive therapy (CT), prolonged exposure therapy (PE), brief eclectic psychotherapy (BEP), and narrative exposure therapy (NET). They’re also well versed in ACT, EFT, IFS, mindfulness, and expressive therapies, just to name a few.

In fact, you can take advantage of our Med Card program and get personalized cannabis-affirmative treatment plans for your condition. Keep an eye out for therapies like psilocybin and ketamine to be added to our roster very soon!

Pain Treatment

Can you assist with medication-assisted treatments like Suboxone or Methadone?

Sometimes. Availability of medication-assisted treatments will depend on patient and prescriber discretion. KindlyMD reserves the right to refer to another entity if such treatments are not an option in-house.

What is the difference between KindlyMD and a traditional pain or medication management clinic?

At KindlyMD, we understand that a cold turkey approach to reducing pain medication just doesn’t work, and many times, additional pain relief is needed. In addition to dispensing and helping to reduce prescription drugs, we educate our patients on (and encourage!) alternative, plant-based treatment options throughout the process.

What is the KindlyMD pain clinic drug use policy?

Patients in our medication management program for pain will be subject to periodic drug testing as outlined in their pain contract. However, a test that shows positive for "plant medicine" will not lead to dismissal from the program — as long as it’s being used legally with a Medical Card, of course. Learn more about getting a Medical Card here.

If additional relief is needed, KindlyMD care providers are highly educated in traditional and alternative sleep medicine to help you find relief. We won’t rest until you’re rested.

Weight Loss

What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in weight loss treatments offered at KindlyMD, such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro injections. It was originally given FDA approval to treat Type 2 Diabetes and is used “off-label” as a weight loss medication in certain circumstances. When combined with our unique system (behavioral health support integrated into weight management programs), we’ve had many patients find success with this treatment.

What happens when you stop taking Semaglutide?

When you stop taking medication for weight loss, you’ll stop benefitting from its effects and can potentially gain back the pounds you’ve lost. To prevent this, KindlyMD integrates the MEANS model for weight management (Medical, Emotional, Activity, Nutrition, Sleep). Care providers work with patients to help them develop positive habits and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
