Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get off my pain medications with a Medical Card?
We help patients wean off narcotics, sleeping pills, and antidepressants by helping them become Medical Cardholders. We understand that many of these prescribed medications cannot be cut abruptly without harsh side effects. For this reason, we provide education to our patients to use both traditional and alternative medicines in tandem safely while working on tapering down their pills.
What are some of the most common qualifying conditions for obtaining a Med Card?
Qualifying conditions for a Medical Card vary from state-to-state, but some of the most common in the country are pain, nausea, PTSD, and cancer. In Utah specifically, a patient can obtain a Med Card for one of the following 15 conditions:
Chronic Pain (lasting 2+ weeks)
ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease)
Alzheimer’s disease
Autism
Cachexia
Cancer
Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis
HIV/AIDS
Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders
Multiple Sclerosis
Nausea
PTSD
Terminal Illness
Rare Conditions
Conditions Requiring Hospice Care
Would a Med Card put me at risk to lose my job?
In some states with Medical Card programs, like Utah, there are limited protections for state and local government employees that view use of this treatment the same as other prescription medication use. This protects employees from being fired for testing positive on a drug screen but does not protect them if they come to work intoxicated or perform poorly at the job because of their use. Private employers can still discipline or fire someone for use if they have such a policy. Alternatively, the use of plant-based medicines without a Medical Card is always illegal and puts you at risk for losing your job.
